It’s a very big day for Arsenal following the news that deals for Juventus’ Mirko Vucinic and FC Schalke’s Julian Draxler appear to have fallen through.
Arsene Wenger has shown his hand with a pursuit of that attacking duo, which means the Gunners could well be offered a variety of strikers in the transfer market today.
Arsenal could use some extra firepower up front to Olivier Giroud, Nicklas Bendtner and Lukas Podolski but the frustration fans will feel if no one comes in has to be balanced against Wenger’s judgement and not making any signings for the sake of it.
Here’s what Arsenal fans are talking about this morning.
Reports this morning that Wenger is still keen to sign a high quality forward don't smell of panic. The Daily Mail has suggested a potential approach for Real Madrid's Alvaro Morata which would arguably be a better deal than bringing in Vucinic.
Disappointed about the Draxler deal - or rather, no deal - considering all the assurances from the nationals this week. #afc— James Ash (@JamesAsh_89) January 31, 2014
Arsenal could still do a deal for Draxler, it just won't be now. He's always maintained that he'd be happier moving after the World Cup, when Arsenal will have more time to haggle and negotiate.
Just pay the Draxler fee, our rivals will do it to win the league so why can't we #afc— Rowland Max-Lino (@max2damaximum) January 31, 2014
The problem isn't Arsenal's ability to pay the fee, it's the structure of the deal. Schalke don't have to play ball and make things easy for Arsenal because they own the German star and hold the position of power.
The summer means more time to work out a payment plan and a side more willing to do business because they can reinvest Draxler's huge fee to improve their own squad.
A common theme but the problem is Wenger has shown his hand. Any team with an Arsenal striker target has just upped their price considerably if the Gunners come knocking.
