Despite Manchester United comfortably beating Cardiff City at Old Trafford last week, their starting midfield duo of makeshift midfielder Phil Jones and 40-year-old Ryan Giggs is simply not good enough for a side looking to seriously challenge for top honours.
The Red Devils have certainly lacked creativity in the middle of the park this season, and have been linked with a number of high-profile midfielders.
One midfield maestro linked to the club over the past couple of months is Argentine playmaker Ever Banega. The 25-year-old is determined to leave Valencia, with manager Juan Antonio Pizzi seemingly resigned to losing him. Both Sunderland and a club in Dubai are said to have put in bids.
Banega, however, was thought more likely to be attracted to Manchester United, although the club is thought not to have followed up on its reported initial interest.
That decision could come back to haunt Manchester United as, according to Spanish newspaper elgoldigital, Banega’s idol Diego Simeone is reported to want to bring the player to the Vicente Calderon Stadium. It is reported that negotiations between the clubs have already commenced, and that a deal is hoped to be completed before the end of the day.
Simeone’s Atletico Madrid have been nothing short of superb this season as the Rojiblancos attempt to bring home a long-awaited La Liga crown. Atletico Madrid’s current midfielders Gabi and Tiago, however, are both into their thirties, and Simeone is attempting to bring through a new generation - and the man who could be the perfect solution to Manchester United's midfield problems could turn out to be Atleti’s playmaker for years to come.
Will Manchester United regret not buying Ever Banega ?
