Given how well Manchester City have played this season, it may surprise some to see them linked with not one but two new signings this transfer deadline day.
But that is exactly what has happened, with FC Porto pair Fernando and Eliaquim Mangala linked with moves to the Etihad Stadium.
The Daily Mail claims the two clubs are currently in talks over a deal, with £35million the figure being reported for both.
Given that amount is less than Mangala’s reported release-clause, there may still be considerable discussions should the claims of talks between the two sides be true. But the report claims Porto are keen to cash in this month if possible, and are willing to accept less for the Frenchman as a result.
But what of Fernando – a midfielder who would be competing with the likes of Fernandinho and Yaya Toure should he arrive at the Etihad Stadium, and one who has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United both in the past and again in recent days?
The negotiations with him could be further along than first thought, with Portuguese newspaper Record claiming Fernando already has an agreement in place to join City.
Given that he is a free-agent in the summer, that could indeed be true, and Record claim discussions between Porto and City will determine whether he arrives in Manchester now (for a fee) or in time for next season.
The report concludes by suggesting that Fernando has no preference as to when he begins his City career.
So, could City be about to bring in another talented midfielder, and get one over on United in the process? Record certainly think so, and all will be revealed in due course.
