For a few hours today, Manchester City fans were no doubt excited by the prospect of signing two new players in the shape of Fernando and Eliaquim Mangala.
The Daily Mail claimed FC Porto were keen to do a deal this month for a combined fee of £35million – which came as something of a shock to those aware of Mangala’s release-clause and his burgeoning reputation; along with the fact that Fernando will be available on a free next summer.
But such is transfer deadline day – the rumours are everywhere.
However, the Express is now reporting that Porto are unwilling to sanction the transfer of either player until the end of the current campaign.
Could it have something to do with their inability to bring in suitable replacements at short notice, or are they holding out for more money in the case of Mangala?
In truth they probably do not want to lose two of their most important players when they are competing for the Portuguese title.
And as if to prove there will be no last minute move, Mangala has been photographed with teammate Steven Defour on his way to Madeira, where Porto will face Maritimo tomorrow.
So any last minute whispers regarding the Frenchman can be duly dismissed….at least for now.
