On this day: Arsenal leave it late for £10m deal, Townsend switch and Suarez speaks the future

Andros Townsend

On the 31st January 2013, Transfer Deadline day, what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, QPR and Liverpool.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 31st January 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

It is Transfer Deadline Day - which means a year since the winter deadline hit in 2013.

So this one should be interesting - and we highlight three of the biggest moments from Transfer Deadline Day 2013.

Mon my way

Arsenal left it late, but snapped up a replacement left-back for the oft-comical departing incumbent Andre Santos.

The Gunners had agreed a £10 million move for Nacho Monreal to arrive from financially crippled Spanish outfit Malaga - and his arrival was confirmed late into the day.

Monreal has proven an excellent squad member since - proving vital in their excellent 2013.

But it shows that Arsenal often keep things close to their chest.

This deal was not known until very late in the day and was signed, sealed and delivered in a matter of hours.

Hope still for anyone hoping the expected arrival of Kim Kallstrom is not the only one at The Emirates

Townsend comes good

On again, off again, on again - QPR were after Andros Townsend in a loan deal from Tottenham Hotspur, but it turned out complicated.

He reportedly agreed, then disagreed with the move - over a potential buying option in the contract.

In the end he did sign on - and went on to have a fantastic second half of the season.

He has since gone on to become an England international, and it is a sign of how well a deadline day move can prove for a player should they take the leap of faith.

Suarez talks

Luis Suarez said some words that looked like coming back to haunt him just six months later.

The Uruguayan stated:

“But I want to say now that, if you want to know what will happen to me if we don't qualify for the Champions League, then I will say this: I have a contract with Liverpool and I am very happy here. I will stay.”

Of course he then almost signed for Arsenal in the summer after Liverpool did not qualify for the Champions League.

But in the end he stayed … so all’s well that ends well.

There you have it, Transfer Deadline day 2013 - with no mention of David Beckham joining Paris Saint-Germain and playing for nothing.
