Birmingham City sign two Manchester United players on loan

Birmingham have completed the loan signings of defenders Tyler Blackett and Tom Thorpe

Birmingham manager Lee Clark has strengthened his side's defence with a double signing from Manchester United. Both signings were announced within half an hour of each other and the players will be with the club until the end of the season.

Tom Thorpe was first to arrive at St Andrews. The 21-year-old joins Birmingham and becomes their new number 5. It is the defender's first loan spell away from Old Trafford, and he arrives after lifting the Barclays Under-21 Premier League trophy as Captain last season. He was also Captain of the youth team that won the FA Youth Cup in 2011. Thorpe will fill the void left by Dan Burn after he returned to Fulham.

Tyler Blackett has joined Thorpe at St Andrews. He is just 19-years-old and is predominantly a left-back. However he can also play further up the field on the left-wing, as well as dropping in at centre-back. His versatility will be key for Birmingham's run-in to the end of the season. He is a big, strong powerful player, known for his free-kick ability as well.

Blackett has been at Manchester United since the age of eight, and spent some time on loan at Blackpool earlier this season. He made five appearances for The Tangerines and will wear the number 37 shirt for Birmingham.
