Liverpool are reportedly working hard behind the scenes to secure the signing of Ukraine international Yevhen Konoplyanka.
Sky Sports News have been reporting for hours that the Reds are still hopeful of a deal, but that certain issues pertaining to the transfer are taking longer to resolve than first planned. And now Talk Sport has reported that the deal will go down "to the wire".
Konoplyanka is a left-winger who has nine goals and six assists for his current club Dnipro this season. And after Brendan Rodgers saw Mohamed Salah opt for a move to Chelsea over one to Anfield, he will not want to miss out again.
That is something former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher observed earlier today when he spoke to Sky Sports News.
When asked if Konoplyanka would be an essential signing for the Reds, Carragher said, “I think it’s essential in the fact that they’ve missed out on Salah.
“I think it’s very important that Liverpool get a player across the line.
“I’m sure the fans will be slightly frustrated if they miss out on another player. If they miss out on another deal it would be a big blow to the club.”
There is still time for the deal to go through, but with or without the new arrival, Carragher believes Liverpool are still favourites ahead of Manchester United for the final champions league place.
Of the current champions, Carragher said, “They’re probably slight outsiders with Liverpool having a six point advantage.”
If Konoplyanka arrives, he could yet help that difference to increase.
