The transfer window often brings about it's share of surprises, and one has emerged in Europe tonight.
BILD report that Brazilian playmaker Diego will move to Atletico Madrid for a fee of €1.5 million.
The Wolfsburg man, who four-and-a-half years ago cost Juventus €27 million, revealed in November that Arsenal had been in touch regarding a deal.
He told The Sun: "I know there is interest from Premier League clubs. I have heard one of them is Arsenal."
Diego played alongside Mesut Ozil at Werder Bremen, combining to win the German Cup before he departed for Juventus.
He had seemingly slipped off Arsenal's radar this month, and had pushed for his future to be resolved by February, hinting he would sign a new deal with Wolfsburg next month if no team came in for him.
So he will be particularly delighted it is his former loan side Atletico Madrid who have moved for his services, even if it is a tad surprising based on his previous comments.
He told Spanish radio station Cadena Cope last month: "I know that Atletico de Madrid coach Diego Simeone admires me, he is a great coach and I wish him to win something important in this season.
"In any case, it's impossible for me to move back to Atletico in January."
Impossible is seemingly just a word, and Atletico now have a Diego to supply their sensational striker Diego Costa. How he would have got in the Premier League, we will seemingly never know.
