Arsenal must repeat deadline-day success to avoid end-of-season despair

Ozil Arsenal 8

If Arsenal can repeat the deadline-day success they enjoyed last summer, they will have more chance of holding off Chelsea and City to claim the title.

Transfer deadline days are a bit like Christmas once you reach a certain age – the excitement is all in the anticipation, with the day itself something of a damp squib.

But for Arsenal fans, the excitement turned to elation last summer when Arsene Wenger pulled off the club-record signing of Mesut Ozil while reporters country-wide stood outside the gates of other clubs with little more to do than calm the waving hoards behind them.

Not so at the Emirates Stadium, where fans celebrated the arrival of one of Europe’s finest. And once the football started again, Ozil proceeded to show what all the fuss was about.

But with a raft of injuries and suspensions – and the twin-threat of Chelsea and Manchester City just a few steps behind – it is time for Wenger to do it again.

Because as much as many January signings are panic buys or pointless ones, if Wenger gets it right, it could be the difference between finally getting his hands on the Premier League trophy again and spending another summer wondering what might have been.

With half a day to go, he will be working hard behind the scenes to get something done…or perhaps a couple of somethings.

After all, he knows how close he is to reclaiming silverware at a club that has been close but not close enough for too long.
