Tottenham Hotspur lost ground in the race for fourth place in the Premier League as, the evening after Liverpool slaughtered local rivals Everton by a 4-0 scoreline to move four points adrift of third place Chelsea with a total haul of 46 from 23 match-days, Spurs were thrashed by Manchester City and now have Manchester United breathing down their necks.
For the Lilywhites, it may feel like a low blow as some of the club's fan-base were seen commenting on Twitter about how the decisions of the referee made a tough match even more arduous as full back Danny Rose was sent for an early bath despite seemingly gaining success in the challenge and winning the ball.
Yaya Toure converted the penalty on the 51st minute to put City 2-0 up while Spurs were one man down. From there, Eden Dzeko added to Toure and Sergio Aguero's earlier goals, before Etienne Capoue scored a consolation effort. Like they have done all season, City showed no mercy, with Steven Jovetic and Vincent Kompany completing the rout.
Can Spurs still achieve a top four finish?
Another nightmare for Spurs. No chance of a top four finish this season. I grow weary. #COYS— Stephen Phillips (@stevephil) January 29, 2014
After that result, I would be more than delighted if Spurs managed any sort of top four finish at the end of the season. #COYS— Luke O'Brien (@lukeobriain) January 29, 2014
The Lane rocking tonight until 4th goal. So much guts by spurs. Referee had a rotten game 4 bad decisions. Rose played brilliantly. #coys— Stinkus (@ian_stephens) January 29, 2014
If the on-side goal was aloud! Rose getting a red even tho he got the ball! No penalty! We could have got something from this game! #coys— John O'Farrell (@Mr___O) January 29, 2014
