Manchester City are hoping to tie up deals for Porto duo Eliaquim Mangala and Fernando.
Manchester City have been relatively quiet this transfer window, which makes a change. But when you are in the form they are, there's no need to put any focus on transfers. They are scoring goals for fun, and progressing well in all competitions.
The league leaders may make some late moves in the transfer window however. The Telegraph reports that they are set to beat Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain to the signing of much admired centre-back Eliaquim Mangala. A deal could be in the offing for £38 million. That would see Mangala's transfer equal Sergio Aguero's as City's record transfer fee.
The 22-year-old defender has had many long-term admirers and it was thought PSG and Manchester United were going to wait until the summer before making a bid. However Manuel Pellegrini has opted to make a move now to try and beat their rivals. Time is running out for City to finalise the deal, but they are pursuing the possibility of it. Mangala is seen as the perfect partner for Vincent Kompany in the centre of defence.
The Metro have also backed up the £38m bid, and report that City are also trying to sign FC Porto midfielder Fernando, another target of Manchester United. It seems these days that clubs quickly try and gazump their rivals once they learn of an interest in a player. We've seen Chelsea do it with Willian and Mohamed Salah. Tottenham Hotspur are now interested in Yevhen Konoplyanka, suddenly after Liverpool's interest had been well known.
Fernando is out of contract at the end of the season, and a deal for the 26-year-old could be around the £7 million mark.
