Southampton duo Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw demonstrated why the best clubs are willing to pay top dollar for their services during Southampton’s 2-2 draw at home to Arsenal.
Left-back Luke Shaw provided the first goal of the night with an excellent cross and Adam Lallana scored Saints’ equaliser in the second half following a quick Arsenal turnaround.
18-year-old Luke Shaw has been linked with a move to both Chelsea and Manchester United – with a figure of £30m being branded about.
The coveted left-back was simply brilliant throughout. Taking 102 touches – more than any other player on the pitch – Shaw had the beating of Arsenal’s Bacary Sagna at right-back time and time again.
Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettini had clearly instructed his side to pass the ball to Shaw as frequently as possible – as his crossing ability caused havoc all night. Shaw provided 11 crosses in total – one of those gleefully headed home by centre back Jose Fonte to give the Saints a thoroughly deserved half-time lead.
Arsene Wenger looked a worried man at half-time and an apparent pep talk sparked the Gunners into life. A quick double out of nothing at the beginning of the second half from Giroud and Cazorla showed all the traits of a team leading the table.
However, inspired by England international Adam Lallana – Southampton quickly equalised.
The 25-year-old Saints youth product – who is linked with a £15m-plus move to Manchester United – caused Arsenal problems all night.
The attacking midfielder turned the ball over five times, scored the equalising goal with a first-time shot following a Jay Rodriguez cut-back and picked up the MOTM award as he drove Southampton forward in search of a late winner.
The English paper the Daily Star have reported Manchester United’s interest – suggesting the Red Devils are looking to take advantage of Nicola Cortese’s departure.
A deal for the duo looks unlikely to happen over the next few days. However, with the pair possibly going to Brazil this summer and integrated amongst England’s finest, it will be a big success for Southampton if they line-up in a Saints shirt for the start of next season.
