On this day: Scholes' car is stolen and Wenger rules out Beckham return

Scholes V Fulham

On January 29 2013, what were the stories grabbing the football headlines? Including stories about Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea.

The transfer deadline of Friday is closing in as managers scramble to get deals done, with others praying for an end to one of the busiest parts of the season. We’ve taken a look back to this time last year to see the main stories making the headlines. What were the issues getting everyone talking?

‘Scholes’ car is stolen’

Former Manchester United midfielder and club legend Paul Scholes had to deal with having his car stolen.

Scholes left the engine running while he defrosted the screen, which prompted someone to sneak in and drive off with his grey Chevrolet estate.

“Motorists may be tempted to leave their vehicle with the engine running while they go inside to stay in the warm - however, it only takes a few seconds to steal a car when keys have been left in the ignition,” said a police spokesman.

‘Mancini praises departing Balotelli’

Mario Balotelli was on his way back to AC Milan, which was a shame for plenty of City fans who fell in love with the controversial Italian striker.

Balotelli was often at odds with the former Manchester City boss, which partly explained his return to Serie A with the enemies of his previous team Inter Milan.

“We love Mario, Mario likes the players but I think he had this big chance to come back in Italy and to play for another top club like Milan – I think if he works hard he can continue his growing and can become one of the best players in Europe,” Mancini told Sky Sports News.

‘Beckham return unlikely’

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said a return to the Premier League for David Beckham was unlikely.

Beckham was training with the Gunners this time last year, which prompted speculation of a possible short term deal with Arsenal, something Wenger quickly ruled out.

“If, in his mind, he wanted to play in the Premier League he would not have gone on holiday. He would have prepared and come in and tried to impress me. But he has told me has done nothing at all,” said the Frenchman.

Beckham subsequently linked up with PSG, donating his salary to charity before retiring at the end of last season.

‘Chelsea move in for Butland’

The Blues had been linked with the Birmingham City goalkeeper and England under-21 international for most of the month.

Sky Sports ran a report, which suggested the Blues had made an approach to Birmingham which didn’t work out with Butland eventually moving to Stoke City over a switch to Stamford Bridge.
