Rodrigo and Ezequiel Garay have more than just their current team in common. Both men play for Benfica, but it is their potential futures that give them even more common ground.
Both were linked with a January transfer to Zenit St Petersburg, and both reportedly rejected said interest in favour of a possible move to England – Garay believed to still be on the radar of Manchester United and Rodrigo regularly linked with Arsenal.
But now it appears that neither player will leave in what remains of this transfer window, with Portuguese newspaper O Jogo reporting that only one more Benfica player will depart this January; that man being Andre Gomes.
The 20-year-old midfielder was tipped to complete a €15million move to an unnamed club in the coming days. And the latest story suggests that remains the case, with Benfica keeping hold of their bigger name players until at least the summer.
At that point, expect the rumour mill to go into overdrive once more – linking the likes of Garay, Rodrigo and Nicolas Gaitan with clubs here, there and everywhere.
But following reports at the weekend that Brendan Rodgers was a big admirer of Gomes, and given the club’s disappointment at failing to sign one exciting young talent in Mohamed Salah, could the Reds complete a deal for Gomes before Saturday?
For now, Gomes’s future remains a mystery. But given the number of stories linking him with a departure, it could well be imminent. Something that does not appear to be the case for the men so regularly linked with Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Arsenal and United.
