Agent of €40m Manchester United solution: 'Cabaye won't force him out' - But what about Pogba?

Could Manchester United end up with Marco Verratti in the summer?

Yohan Cabaye is now a former player of Newcastle, sealing a switch to PSG on Wednesday evening.

With competition for places at the club keenly contested, speculation in France is already firing up regarding who could lose out. Blaise Matuidi's expiring contract is a question mark, although club president Nasser El Khalaifi is confident he will renew.

Italian international Marco Verratti has been a key man this season, making 16 Ligue 1 starts, and his agent is adamant he will not be displaced from the side by Cabaye.

Donato di Campli told Tuttomercato: "Cabaye's arrival does not scare us, rather it is a very useful purchase for the PSG if they have some problems with injuries in the middle of the field.

"Marco is (having) a wonderful time in France and is living a very good moment of form, is one of the idols of the Parc des Princes."

That's understandable, but Verratti is a keenly admired footballer, valued at €40 million by former PSG director Leonardo.

Napoli have been linked with bringing him back to Italy, while earlier this January The Express linked the defensive midfielder to Manchester United.

The 21-year-old would be an outstanding addition to the Red Devils, but PSG nor the player are willing to move on, yet.

Competition for places is competitive, with Thiago Motta in the form of his life, and starlet Adrien Rabiot jostling for chances.

PSG's long-term goal however, could become a tipping point too far for Verratti. The French champions are desperate to sign Paul Pogba of Juventus, reportedly willing to offer €60 million for the former United prodigy in the summer.

That would surely be the game-changer for Verratti, and with Financial Fair Play likely to become a consideration for PSG sooner rather than later - United would be wise to pounce.

None of their top choice central midfield targets appear to be available this transfer window, and so United would be wise to wait it out and try for the Italian in the summer should Pogba seal his mega-move.

Verratti has a pass completion rate of 91.9% in Ligue 1 this season, and has made 45 tackles and 32 interceptions in 16 starts. With four assists to his name too, he is a holding player with real quality with the ball at his feet.

It may take a big transfer which has no bearing on them directly to make it a possibility, but if Manchester United could sign Verratti in the summer - they would acquire a player able to become the mainstay of their midfield for the next decade.
