The French centre-back has found himself overlooked at times this season in the Biancazzurri's rearguard and has been considered dispensable by the Serie A outfit, with the Canaries set to take him for the rest of the season.
Canaries manager Chris Hughton has faced a defensive crisis in recent weeks after Michael Turner sustained a hamstring injury during the festive period and left the club depending on the fitness of Sebastien Bassong and Ryan Bennett.
Having three central defenders for two positions is always a gamble, but to have just two ahead of an anticipated relegation battle would have been detrimental to any aspirations of retaining their Premier League status.
Hughton has therefore sanctioned a move for the 29-year-old, with Mirror journalist James Nursey revealing on the website's live blog: "Norwich are set to boost their defence by securing Lazio stopper Michael Ciani on loan.
Canaries' boss Chris Hughton wants a new centre-back with Michael Turner injured.
And the Norfolk club are hopeful of bringing in Frenchman Ciani, 29, later this week.
The 6ft 2in defender will compete with Sebastien Bassong and Ryan Bennett."
Norwich have conceded 35 goals this season, with only four clubs conceding more and the Canaries have a worrying goal difference of -17.
Nursey also revealed on his Twitter that the East Anglian outfit hope to bring a midfielder in before the deadline.
