Chelsea youngster mugged for £10,000 watch – a case of bad timing

It's been a very tough week for Blues star Josh McEachran.

If Josh McEachran has a sense of irony he may well afford himself a bitter smile this week. One financial blow is bad enough, but two in the space of four days has got to hurt.

Last Thursday, 20-year-old McEachran took a ‘significant pay cut’, by joining Championship side Wigan Athletic on loan from Premier League high-flyers Chelsea, where his career has stalled alarmingly since his first-team debut four years ago.

Wigan manager Uwe Rosler was impressed by the youngster’s willingness to take a wage cut in order to get first-team football – but McEachran soon found himself even further out of pocket.

On Monday, the Evening Standard reported that McEachran had his £10,000 watch snatched by muggers while he was out shopping with his girlfriend.

While it may be hard to drum up some sympathy for a player who would not have been short of a penny or two while at Chelsea – and can afford to spend more on a watch then many people fork out on a car - you have to feel a little sorry for the timing of the unfortunate incident.

McEachran has been having a hard time of things of late. Since emerging as one of English football’s brightest young talents under Carlo Ancelotti at Chelsea, he has hit a dead-end.

Loans at Swansea City, Middlesbrough and Watford have followed, with varying degrees of success, but under the management of Jose Mourinho he appears some way from the first team.

It is hoped that his latest loan spell at the DW Stadium will get his career back on track. Rosler believes that McEachran has suffered under weight of expectation at Chelsea, and in that sense the player can at least be guaranteed time and space to develop at Wigan.

The Wigan manager is quoted in the Manchester Evening News as saying: “They sent him out on loan and for some reason his career has stalled a little bit. He didn’t progress as much as Josh and maybe Chelsea thought. Now, Josh comes into a situation here and Josh knows exactly what he needs, which way he will respond best and Chelsea also know that.”
