On this day: $3bn Manchester United and Spurs reach Holtby agreement

On the 28th January 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 28th January 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 28th January 2013…

Beck up a second

David Beckham joined up with Arsenal. The former Manchester United star, who almost joined Tottenham Hotspur a year earlier, was at the clubs London Colney training facility - but he was not on his way to The Emirates.

The superstar player was training with the club, with Arsene Wenger personally giving the thumbs up, as he tried to keep fit for his next move after leaving LA Galaxy.

Plenty of excited Arsenal players such as Jack Wilshere and Lukas Podolski took the opportunity to get a pic with Becks - but they didn’t get to play with him.

He joined Paris Saint-Germain on a six month deal less than a week later.

Drogba on a new path

Didier Drogba was on the move again - bringing to an end his Chinese nightmare with a switch to Turkish giants Galatasaray.

Drogba had joined Shanghai Shenhua at the end of his contract with Chelsea in 2012 - but the move quickly turned sour amid boardroom unrest and financial difficulties.

But he was still in demand, and signed an 18-month deal in Istanbul.

$3bn United

Manchester United were valued at $3 billion by Forbes magazine - in doing so United became the first sports club to be valued at such a price - £2.1 billion in English money.

They were well clear of the Dallas Cowboys, in second place at $2.1 billion.

It all stemmed from floating shares in the club on the New York Stock Exchange in August 2012.

Holt on, we’re going home

Lewis Holtby signed for Tottenham. The German international had already agreed a Bosman deal for the summer - but with Sandro out until the end of the season Spurs moved quick to bring in the player on a cut-price deal.

A year later and he is expected to leave the club in the next couple of days after failing to settle at White Hart Lane.
