A round up of the latest transfer stories and rumours about Newcastle United.
Borussia Monchengladbach striker Luuk De Jong is closing in on a move to Newcastle. The German side confirmed the forward will have a medical with the Toon ahead of a loan deal over the second half of the season.
Newcastle have agreed a deal with Paris Saint-Germain for midfielder Yohan Cabaye. The Toon originally rejected a £14 million offer but a deal in the region of £20-23 million is reported to have been agreed between the two clubs. Cabaye is set to have a medical today ahead of an official announcement.
Lyon star Clement Grenier is giving nothing away after learning of interest from Newcastle. The 23-year-old has been constantly linked with a switch to the Premier League side this month but has revealed he’s in no hurry to leave the Ligue One side.
“I have learned that Newcastle are tracking me, but I still have targets with Lyon. If one day ... the time comes that I have to go, I will,” he’s quoted as saying by the Chronicle Live.
The Daily Mail suggested yesterday that Newcastle United could still move for Lyon forward Bafetimbi Gomis. The striker is being tipped to complete a move to Serie A giants AC Milan but the report didn’t rule out the possibility Newcastle could make a last gasp attempt to sign their long term target.
Gomis could be a potential replacement for current Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse, with the Mirror suggesting Cisse could leave this summer for £6 million. A number of Qatari Stars League sides are thought to be interested in signing the Senegalese star.
Former Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton has suggested Norwich City’s reported interest in Toon defender Steven Taylor is nothing more than a product of the rumour mill. Taylor has been suggested as a target who could sure up the Canaries’ defence.
“If (Steven Taylor) is another one, probably because of my association (with Newcastle), and that one (Ciani), no, again it would be the rumour mill going around,” said Hughton.
Loic Remy reportedly turned down the chance to join Newcastle United permanently this month. Papers over the weekend suggested the Toon were trying to do a permanent deal for the QPR star but Remy reportedly wants to keep his options open for after the World Cup this summer.
