Liverpool legend slates Arsenal - 'no effort'... then they equalise

Giroud In Action V Cardiff

Arsenal rammed early critics' words back at them midway through their game with Southampton.

Arsenal's first half against Southampton was poor, but this Gunners side has a habit of bouncing back.

None more so than immediately after SkySports pundit Phil Thompson, a former Liverpool player - who tore into them.

"They've been poor, passing dreadful, the attitude, of the midfield and the striker, not one have them have put any sort of effort in. The only positive is it's only 1-0."

Like clockwork, seconds later - Arsenal equalised.

Who was it? None other than Olivier Giroud - who scored his fourth in his last five games - and answered Thompson's criticism immediately with the 50th minute strike.

The credit is all down to Arsene Wenger and whatever he said to his side at half-time, as Santi Cazorla put them 2-1 up just a few minutes later - only for Southampton to peg them back in a pulsating encounter, through Adam Lallana.
