Stats: Chelsea's €15m target compares to Kompany, Koscielny & Vertonghen?

Kurt Zouma

Chelsea are allegedly attempting to bring Zouma to Stamford Bridge but how does he compare to Manchester City, Arsenal & Tottenham Hotspur's defence?

At six foot, three and a half inches tall with a weight of 13 stones and five pounds, Saint Etienne star Kurt Zouma has the physical traits befitting of an imposing centre back and, at 19-years-old, there may even be further room to grow, whilst even developing 'man strength'.

Of three of the top Premier League defenders, he is physically similar to Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany, whilst taller than both Laurent Koscielny and Jan Vertonghen, at Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, respectively.

Attacking threats are not nullified on providing a physical presence alone and still requires timing, positional sense, speed and an ability to build attacks from the back, so how does Zouma compare to the aforementioned trident?

PlayerClubTacklesInterceptionsClearancesPass AccuracyAve PassesMinutes
 Zouma  Saint Etienne  12  11  102  86%  30  922
 Koscielny  Arsenal  36  56  133  92%  38  1,639
 Kompany  Man City  31  24  84  87%  39  1,095
 Vertonghen  Tottenham  23  24  53  84%  46  1,260

While Zouma's statistics pale in numerical value when scrutinised alongside Koscielny, Kompany and Vertonghen's, it is important to note that the Frenchman has participated in fewer cumulative league minutes than his Premier League counterparts.

On average, Zouma makes a defensive contribution (either a tackle, interception or clearance) once every 8 minutes, almost identical to Kompany's contributing a defensive action every 7.9 minutes, far greater than Jan Vertonghen's average of one every 12.6 minutes, but slightly inferior to Arsenal stopper Koscielny's statistic of completing one defensive contribution every 7.3 minutes.

Koscielny, Kompany and Vertonghen are all entering the prime years for a centre back (28, 27 and 26), while Zouma has the edge as he is just 19, capable of drastic improvements despite his commendable achievements to date.

At €15m, would the Saint Etienne star be the long-term replacement for Chelsea mainstay John Terry?

According to reports from France (Le10Sport), Chelsea and Zouma have already agreed a provisional contract, with Zouma committed to a five and a half year deal. Whether a transfer fee with the club has been ratified remains, as of yet, unknown.
