One less target for Manchester United as midfielder agrees 18-month move

Previously linked with a move to Manchester United, FC Porto midfielder Lucho Gonzalez has instead signed for Al-Rayyan.

Manchester United have been linked with numerous players since David Moyes took the reins, but fans of the champions can chalk one name off the list of potential new arrivals.

Back in December, the Express claimed Moyes was considering a move for FC Porto midfielder Lucho Gonzalez – a 33-year-old Argentine who he reportedly attempted to sign twice while in charge of Everton.

Given the player’s age, it was always something of a left-field link. But now that link is no more, because while Juan Mata was completing the formalities of a £37.1million move to United, Gonzalez was finalising a switch to Qatari side Al-Rayyan.

Portuguese newspaper A Bola has reported that the midfielder has signed an 18-month contract and reportedly said on the move, “There is strong competition here and this is one of the strongest leagues in the region.”

So United’s search for a new central midfielder goes on. Although in truth, Gonzalez was always unlikely to be the answer.
