We’ve entered the final week of the January transfer window, which generally means clubs will spark into life as they hunt down last minute deals to address key areas of their squads, but what was going on this time last year? What last minute transfer rumours were making the headlines?
‘Wenger admits he wants a striker’
Sound familiar Arsenal fans?
The Mirror reported that three strikers were on Arsenal’s shortlist; David Villa, Stevan Jovetic and Adrian Lopez.
Wenger was quizzed on whether the side needed a new centre forward before the end of the January transfer window last year, replying:
“Quality-wise, no. But number-wise we are maybe a bit short. It will not be easy, though, because you do not find strikers who are good enough to play for us on the street.”
‘Holloway delighted with Zaha deal’
Former Crystal Palace boss Ian Holloway announced his delight at Wilfried Zaha joining Manchester United, wishing him luck and suggesting he played a big role in the deal.
Some criticised the deal suggesting that Holloway was giving in to the riches of a Premier League giant but in typical Holloway fashion, he defended himself in bullish fashion via his Daily Mirror column.
“And before any cynics out there think about raising an eyebrow, let me make it clear straight away that I won’t be making a single penny from a transfer that was in danger of dying on the vine,” wrote the popular coach.
‘Chelsea chase under-21 star’
Some Chelsea fans may remember when the club was linked with a move for Birmingham City’s Jack Butland.
Butland was, and still is, rated as one of the best goalkeeping talents around with the Mirror stating he was a ‘bargain’ who could be ‘tucked away for future use’.
The fee being reported was £3 million, the amount Stoke eventually got him for.
