With the January transfer window deadline imminently approaching this Friday at 11pm, the North Londoners have little time to agree a deal for the Schalke starlet.
However, former Gunners title-winner Robert Pires believes the 20-year-old German international would be the ‘perfect’ addition to Arsene Wenger’s squad as we head into the business end of the Premier League title fight.
“Draxler is a good player, young and with a lot of potential,” said the 40-year-old Frenchman.
“Whenever I see him play, I always think his style of play would be a perfect fit for Arsenal.”
“I can well imagine Draxler being used on the left, but also as number 9, he could really strengthen the team,” he added.
High praise indeed for a young attacking midfielder from a man who won the Premier League title twice with Arsenal, the FA Cup three times, as well as going the entire 2003/04 season unbeaten. At international level Pires won the World Cup with France in 1998 and the European Championships two years later in 2000 before signing for Arsenal that same year.
Pires became a club legend and a fans' favourite during his six-year spell in North London alongside the club’s record goal scorer and his fellow France international Thierry Henry. Pires also featured in the 2006 Champions League final with Arsenal in Paris in which the Gunners were defeated by Barcelona.
The Frenchman would know a thing or two about playing as an attacking midfielder or winger in the Premier League as well as scoring a few goals – it certainly would take something special for a player like Draxler to notch up 84 goals for the Gunners across 284 appearances but the man himself believes the young target would be the ideal signing for his former club this week.
