Fulham have recently been linked with a move for FC Porto midfielder Steven Defour.
The player was once hotly-tipped to join Manchester United, with Sir Alex Ferguson reported to have been a huge admirer of the Belgian midfielder.
Perhaps Rene Meulensteen had been just as impressed, because the ex-United first-team coach was heavily linked with a January move for Defour.
However, any interest now seems redundant, with Portuguese newspaper A Bola reporting that Defour will remain at Porto following the departure of fellow midfielder Lucho Gonzalez to Qatari side Al-Rayyan.
The latest report claims Defour wanted a move to the Cottagers and that a three-and-a-half-year deal was on the table. But it is now said that the player “will have more opportunities to demonstrate his value” following the sale of Gonzalez.
Defour has made eight league appearances so far this season, three of which have come from the bench. In contrast, Gonzalez appeared twice as many times in the league.
But following the Argentine’s departure, it seems the reported Fulham target will now find the chances he so craved, seemingly ending any possibility of a move to England…at least for now.
