Following all the questions over who will arrive to take the number 7 shirt at Manchester United, the answer could well be close to home.
Following Juan Mata’s arrival at Old Trafford it seemed almost certain the Spaniard would be wearing one number. A number reserved for the very best and most influential of players – the number 7.
So it came as something of a surprise when instead the former Chelsea man went one higher, and held up a shirt with the number 8 on the back.
That news generated almost as much buzz as Mata’s helicopter ride and subsequent signing at Old Trafford. Because if the number 7 remained vacant, surely that only meant one thing – another player was on the way…a player even more exciting than the majestic midfielder.
Well, maybe, but I have another theory, and that is that United already have their next number 7. He just happens to currently be wearing number 44.
That player is of course Adnan Januzaj, who has shone like the only star on an otherwise gloomy night for United this season – stepping up time and again, and showing up some of his more illustrious teammates as a result.
United will almost certainly sign new players in the summer – players who may be worthy of such an illustrious number. But I have a feeling Januzaj will be given the job of following in the footsteps of the likes of David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.
After all, he already has the talent in abundance.
