On this day: Coutinho fee agreed as Arsenal struggle on the seaside

On the 26th January 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Liverpool, Southampton, Chelsea and Arsenal.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 26th January 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 26th January 2013…

Coutinho arrives

Liverpool agreed a fee for Brazilian starlet Philippe Coutinho. Brendan Rodgers was a big fan of the player and previously made two more attempts to sign the player.

He was in a battle with the player’s former boss Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton but it appeared the south coast club had not met the valuation for the player.

Four days later he was awarded a work permit from the Home Office and signed for £8.5 million - which looks a bargain now.

Rafa wants to stay

Rafa Benitez was talking about potentially taking the interim Chelsea managers job full-time:

“I'd like to be in a top side. And Chelsea are a top side with great potential. So it's a great opportunity. I came in the middle of the season, so I couldn't change too many things and I had to work with the squad I had.”

Of course no Chelsea fan wanted that - as Rafa was widely unpopular.

But after he won them the Europa League some Chelsea fans would have had second thoughts.

But then came the Special One … and the rest is history …

Tough at the seaside for Arsenal

Arsenal made very hard work of Championship side Brighton in the FA Cup.

Goals from Olivier Giroud (2) were not enough to win them the game - as Ashley Barnes and Jose Ulloa bagged goals for The Seagulls.

However, with five minutes left Theo Walcott played the hero - winning them the game 3-2.

Unfortunately for Arsenal they went out in the next round to Blackburn Rovers.
