Manchester United transfer news: Five more tipped to arrive; Rooney going nowhere?

A select round-up of transfer news relating to Manchester United

Following the completion of Juan Mata’s £37.1million move from Chelsea to Manchester United, the Mirror reports that the Blues were willing to sell him to anyone but David Moyes’ side.

The story claims the Spaniard had an agreement in place with Jose Mourinho that he could leave Stamford Bridge if he was not a first-team regular by Christmas. But they report that the only proviso was Old Trafford was not an option.

However, it is claimed Chelsea changed their mind when it became clear just how much United were willing to pay to secure Mata.

The Sunday Times reports that the 25-year-old is just the beginning, with Moyes reportedly hoping to sign five more players of the quality of Mata in an overhaul of the current United squad.

However, if that is to be the case, we expect most of the transfer business to be conducted next summer.

And finally, the Mail on Sunday reports that United have absolutely no intention of seeling Wayne Rooney to Chelsea, regardless of the Mata move.

The reports claim Mourinho has used the Spaniard’s move as a “bargaining chip” in preparation for a move for the England striker next summer. But it is suggested United would rather allow Rooney to run down the final year of his contract than sell him to the London club.

Talks over a new contract are reportedly ongoing, so only time will tell if Rooney is part of the new-look United in the seasons to come.
