This morning Liverpool fans woke up to the news that they were linked with Benfica midfielder Andre Gomes.
The 20-year-old has featured predominantly for the Portuguese club’s B team this season. But with the departure of Nemanja Matic, he could have hoped for more chances in the months and years ahead.
The Sunday Times reported that Benfica wanted £12.4million for the player if he was to leave. And with Liverpool needing to soften the blow of Lucas Leiva’s lay-off, a move was touted for a player Brendan Rodgers reportedly felt was well suited to the Reds’ passing game.
This afternoon Portuguese newspaper A Bola claims the player has been sold for €15million, with the business of his future now said to be in the hands of agent Jorge Mendes.
The report goes on to claim that Mendes could announce the player’s next club “at any time”.
So are the two reports linked? Could Gomes soon be on his way to Liverpool?
Only time will tell. But if the latest claim is true, Benfica have sold their second midfielder in a matter of days…a player who just may be about to join Matic in the Premier League.
