Report: Lazio nearly signed Anelka

According to Il Messaggero, Lazio came very close to swooping for West Bromwich Albion striker Nicolas Anelka only to see a deal evaporate.

Nicolas Anelka's future at West Brom looks uncertain as he awaits an FA decision on whether he will be banned for his 'quenelle' gesture.

The club have already lost their sponsor Zoopla from the end of this season because of the incident and Anelka's days with the Baggies could be numbered.

Reports in Il Messaggero suggest that Anelka could have been headed to Serie A this month if Lazio had managed to close out a deal they put in motion.

Club president Claudio Lotito had allegedly practically completed a loan move for Anelka when the player's agent called to ask for an increase in the salary they had agreed.

Lazio were close to agreeing to sell striker Sergio Floccari to Sassuolo to make room for Anelka but they had to call off that transfer at the last minute.

Il Messaggero believes it would be very difficult for Lazio to re-open talks over Anelka as Lotito felt let down by the way their previous talks ended.

Lazio are looking for a new striker but may end up moving for Genoa's Alberto Gilardino or Marco Sau of Cagliari instead.
