Juan Mata arrived for his Manchester United medical today as the Premier League champions make a £37 million signing with the intention of throwing down a statement of intent to their recent critics, as well as trying to salvage an inconsistent season.
The Spanish midfielder has been given the number seven shirt at United to follow the likes of David Beckham and Crisitano Ronaldo in carrying that number as he looks forward to settling in with his new employers.
United fans are unsurprisingly excited about the prospect of having Mata in their team with a mixture of positive responses and a little bit of confusion as to why Jose Mourinho let such a good player leave Chelsea.
Mata was Chelsea’s player of the season for two years on the bounce but struggled to make an impact under Mourinho, which has pushed him to Old Trafford with very few United fans complaining over the quality of player they have picked up.
He produced 25 assists over the course of the 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 seasons and will inject creativity, which has been badly missing from the current crop of United midfield stars.
How Moyes will fit him into the team remains to be seen, with the boss having several different options such as playing him towards the left or the much more likely option of allowing him to control the midfield through the middle.
It’s also a very important second half of the season for the Spanish playmaker as he’ll be trying to produce the sort of form which makes him a start for Spain at the World Cup this summer.
Focus at the Old Trafford club will now switch to whether Moyes could make further additions to the squad before the close of the January transfer window this coming Friday. Here’s what United fans have made of Mata joining their club.
