Liverpool transfer news: Mourinho ‘would have sold Mata’ to Reds; Rodgers hints at youth chances

A select round-up of transfer news relating to Liverpool...

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed he would have sold Juan Mata to Liverpool – or any of the other top Premier League sides – if they had made a sufficient bid for him.

There has been consternation among some managers that one of the Blues’ best players has been allowed to move to Manchester United once David Moyes’ side has already faced Chelsea twice this season.

But in quotes published by London24, Mourinho said, “If a similar situation happens (and) instead of us, instead of Man United, it’s Arsenal or Manchester City or Tottenham or Liverpool, we would do the same.

If the offer was the same and Juan desired to go, it would be the same.”

So maybe the Reds should stick a cheeky bid in for Eden Hazard…or perhaps not.

In other news, Brendan Rodgers has revealed that he will only make January signings if he feels they can add real value to the current squad.

In an interview published by the Daily Post, the Liverpool boss said, “January is a very difficult market. It is hard to bring in players that can improve the team, especially in this window.

“This is a brilliant club and we try to get players in the for the now. We need players who can come in now and help us.

“I’d rather wait and look at our young players than bring in one or two squad players.”

That may be no bad thing, given some of the young prospects currently at Anfield and the club’s history of giving youth a chance.
