Sami Khedira’s Real Madrid future has been in doubt for some time.
The German international had not had the best of seasons even before the serious knee injury he suffered on international duty. And reports continued to link him with a move to England, with Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United all said to be interested.
The most recent stories came in December, when the Mirror claimed the midfielder would be available for a cut-price £20million next summer, with David Moyes and Arsene Wenger heading the queue.
But now the Spanish press have had their say, with broadsheet El Confidencial reporting that Khedira will in fact sign a new deal at the Bernabeu when he returns to the club in two weeks.
They claim the first thing he will do on his return is put pen to paper on a new deal that runs until 2018.
On more than one occasion, the story says “if nothing changes” Khedira will sign a new deal, so perhaps there remains an element of doubt in regards to a player who will have suitors all over the world. Then again it may simply be a case of ensuring the player is making good progress in his rehabilitation before talks are finalised.
Khedira would be an excellent addition to a whole host of Premier League clubs, but with Chelsea having bought Nemanja Matic and Manchester City well-stocked in that department, it really did appear to be a straight fight between Arsenal and United had he wanted a move to England.
As it is, if the latest report is to be believed, he will be going nowhere for quite a while.
