Arsenal transfer news: £36m Draxler fee 'an illusion' says Wenger; Mandzukic dropped

Julian Draxler

All the latest news and gossip from The Emirates this morning.

Arsenal beat Coventry City 4-0 yesterday in a victory that sounds and looks as easy as it was. But what is going on in the transfer market for Arsenal fans to consider?

Well they have recently been linked with Croatian forward Mario Mandzukic - and Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer has admitted he might have to be packing his bags.

That does not mean he will be going anywhere this month however.

Instead he was referring to a potential summer exit - as Robert Lewandowski arrives in Munich from fierce rivals Borussia Dortmund on a Bosman deal.

However rumours of an impending exit gathered steam after Mandzukic did not feature against Borussia Monchengladbach last night - dropped from the squad because of a poor training session performance that irked Pep Guardiola.

Julian Draxler rumours just will not go away - as it is reported once again that The Gunners will sign the German international before the deadline shuts in six days.

The Schalke 04 player has been consistently linked with a move to The Emirates in recent weeks and reports in Germany claim that a £36 million fee has been agreed for the talented attacker.

Arsene Wenger has remained coy on the subject when pressured by the media - but despite that it is believed a deal will be done before Friday.

However Wenger denied such a move last night after the Coventry game:

"That is an illusion. There is nothing happening, honestly no. We don't need to take players on the flanks - we have 17 players on the flanks."

Rumours abounded yesterday that Hulk might be on his way to the club - after he was spotted at Luton airport in a photo on Instagram.

However, it is now reported the Zenit St Petersburg forward was simply on a stopover from a long-haul flight to Portugal from Brazil - as he enjoys his winter break.
