On this day: United agreed £15m fee for star set to be loaned out; Holtby not being 'given away'

Wilfried Zaha playing for Crystal Palace

On the 24th January 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, West Ham, Crystal Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 24th January 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 24th January 2013…

Zaha agreed

Manchester United agreed a fee with Crystal Palace for their star young winger Wilfried Zaha. United were battling with the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool for his signature but it was United who agreed a package that could eventually be worth £15 million for Palace.

With the fee agreed he was all set to complete a medical at the club before being loaned out back to Selhurst Park for the rest of the season.

But just one year into his five-and-a-half year deal and United are set to loan him out to Cardiff City.

Zaha has struggled under the tutelage of new boss David Moyes and is not playing regular first-team football at the Theatre of Dreams.

No bargain deal for Holtby

Schalke 04 were doing some hard talking in wake of news Tottenham bid for their star player Lewis Holtby.

The German midfielder had already agreed to join the club when his contract expired in the summer but after Sandro picked up a serious knee injury Spurs wanted him in earlier.

However they were not simply ready to sell him for pittance:

"We are in intensive talks, but Lewis is a young Germany international with the quality that goes with it and you don't just give somebody like that away for a bargain price."

In the end they sold him for just shy of €2 million - which sounds like a bargain to us.

However a year later and the Gelsenkirchen outfit are now trying to bring him back to the Bundesliga.

Diame going nowhere

West Ham midfielder Momo Diame was talking about his future. The Senegalese midfielder was being heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in the days preceding the 24th - but despite reports of him willing to take the case to FIFA if the Hammers wouldn’t let him leave - he refuted such claims himself:

"I knew when I signed that West Ham were going to make their mark on the Premier League. Since I came here I am enjoying every game I play on the pitch."
