Mourinho: We'd like Essien to stay

Essien Training

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has insisted that he hopes midfielder Michael Essien doesn't leave, as AC Milan try and finalise a deal.

AC Milan are hoping to close a loan deal for Michael Essien today but Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho claims that he doesn't want to see the Ghanaian international leave.

The Rossoneri have been circling Essien since Clarence Seedorf replaced Massimiliano Allegri on their bench.

It has been suggested that Allegri didn't see how Essien would fit into his system of play while Seedorf is happy to accommodate him.

La Gazzetta dello Sport is reporting that this is the day a deal will be done and that talks are currently taking place.

The paper also claims that Mourinho has given the green light for Essien to leave, which seems to go against the Portuguese manager's statements in today's press conference.

"At the moment he's in a position where he could either stay or go," Mourinho told the assembled journalists.

"We would be happier if he stayed at Chelsea. He's a big figure at the club and another player who has given everything for this shirt."

The next 24 hours look likely to reveal whether Essien will be headed out of Stamford Bridge and a loan still looks likely given the player's agent's admission that he is determined to find more regular first-team football.
