First signing of Moyes era considers Serie A switch

Uruguayan right-back Guillermo Varela was David Moyes' first signing at Manchester United but he could already be headed to Italy.

Manchester United boss David Moyes is struggling to establish himself at Old Trafford and his first signing at the club Guillermo Varela looks likely to leave after six months at the club.

A disastrous summer transfer campaign saw Moyes thwarted in his attempts to bring any high-profile new recruits to the club.

Under-20 international Varela did join from Penarol last June and signed a five-year deal despite having very little experience having impressed at the Under-20 World Cup.

The deal had been set in motion during Sir Alex Ferguson's tenure and Moyes agreed to proceed with the signing.

Many expected Varela to be sent out on loan in the summer to get some first-team football elsewhere but that hasn't happened and the player has reportedly become bored in Manchester.

Reports suggest that the player has asked to be let out on loan in January and even tried to set up a temporary return to his former side Penarol, but now Serie A side Torino are said to be lining up a bid.

According to La Stampa, Torino are looking for a deal that would bring Varela in for the rest of the season with the option to make the deal permanent for a set fee the two clubs would agree in negotiations.

This means that if Varela impresses the Granata he may not be returning to David Moyes' squad.
