Fiorentina's defender search leads to Spurs or Man United

Vidic

Fiorentina are reportedly deciding whether to try and sign Tottenham's Younes Kaboul or Nemanja Vidic of Manchester United.

Fiorentina's defender hunt continues and the Viola may look to the Premier League to do their January shopping.

The Tuscan side have been linked with Manchester United defender Nemanja Vidic for some time and he remains one of their primary targets but Tottenham's Younes Kaboul could also fit the bill.

La Repubblica-Firenze today suggests that Fiorentina have drawn up a short list of defensive options with six players in the frame.

In addition to Vidic and Kaboul, the list includes Serie A men Matias Silvestre of AC Milan, wantaway Napoli stopper Paolo Cannavaro, Cagliari's Davide Astori, who was allegedly a target for Manchester United, and Chievo's Dario Dainelli who played for Fiorentina between 2004 and 2010.

It's still unclear whether Manchester United are willing to sell Vidic at this stage but he looks unlikely to sign a contract extension and so will be a free agent in the summer.

It may be that Fiorentina have to wait until then, but there is likely to be a sizeable queue of potential suitors that could include Serie A rivals Juventus.

Kaboul has only made two appearances for Spurs in the last 18 months as he has been plagued by injury.

However, the 28-year-old has finally returned to full training and could be available for selection by Tim Sherwood soon, which may make Spurs reluctant to sell him.
