The Spaniard will reportedly complete a medical ahead of his £37m move to Old Trafford tomorrow, and Jose Mourinho has wasted no time in lining up another playmaker to take Mata's place, as Basel's Mohamed Salah becomes the man in the spotlight.
The 21-year-old, who has been dubbed “The Egyptian Messi”, has been a long-term target for Brendan Rodgers' Liverpool, and rumours this week suggested that Salah would finally be completing his protracted move to Anfield, after the Reds reportedly agreed a £10m fee for the winger.
But now with Mata on his way to United, and Kevin de Bruyne now with Wolfsburg after his £17m move last week, Mourinho needs to replenish his attacking options, and it seems he's about to pull off a steal – in the same way he did with Willian, who was set to sign for Spurs – and take Salah to Stamford Bridge.
An offer of €15m (£12.25M) plus add-ons has been submitted to the Swiss club, and the two clubs are now closing in on agreement which will infuriate Liverpool fans, as the club miss out on yet another target after their failed bids for Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Willian last summer.
Chelsea fans will be familiar with Salah, who turned in impressive displays against the Blues in last year's Europa League and in the Champions League this year, and has already racked up three goals against Chelsea in his short career so far.
Whilst his signing will certainly eradicate the prospect of him bagging against the Blues again, Salah is an exceptional talent whose pace, dribbling and trickery has not only bewildered opposing defences, but made him one of the hottest prospects in European football.
Whilst his path to the first team may be blocked by the likes of Eden Hazard, Oscar, Willian and Andre Schurrle early on in his Chelsea career, Salah has the potential to be a star, and will become a valuable member of the squad in West London.
