Former Liverpool midfielder linked with West Brom

Albert Riera spent two seasons at Liverpool under Rafa Benitez.

Former Liverpool winger Albert Riera could be in line for a return to the Premier League with West Bromwich Albion according to the Daily Mail.

Riera spent two seasons on Merseyside – where he was part of Liverpool’s side who got their Premier League record points total as they came within four points of winning the title in 2009. The Spaniard is currently plying his trade with Turkish side Galatasaray.

He scored five goals in 40 matches in his debut season but failed to build on that before leaving Anfield.

New Baggies boss Pepe Mel has earmarked Riera to bolster his midfield according to the Mail, and he may have had the advice of the person who persuaded Mel to take the job at The Hawthorns in Rafa Benitez, who worked with Riera at Anfield.

Now at 31, if West Brom get a similar kind of player that first arrived in the league they will get a player who can offer the side balance. Though not blessed with pace, he never seemed afraid to take on a defender one-on-one and had a decent delivery which caused defences problems.

Since leaving the Premier League he’s played for Olympiakos where he had a pretty impressive season in the Greek League scoring six goals and providing 13 assists before signing for Galatasaray in 2012.

It’s of little surprise that the new Baggies boss is being linked with a fellow countryman, but Riera is a player who could still have something to offer at the top level.
