No matter what happens between now and the end of the season, Samuel Eto’o has achieved legendary status at Stamford Bridge.
Not in the sense of the Chelsea greats like John Terry and Gianfranco Zola, but in the way all clubs have their “do you remember when” heroes.
For years, for decades, Blues fans will be saying, “Do you remember when Eto’o scored a hat-trick against Manchester United?”
The player himself has a few more months to add to his goal-tally, before reportedly returning to Spain. And given his impact last Sunday, he could still be the one to fire Jose Mourinho to a trophy on his second first season at the club.
Speaking to Chelsea’s official website, Eto’o has revealed his thoughts on the season so far, and his feelings for the Blues.
“If Chelsea are not the best club in the world, then they are one of the best clubs in the world,” he said. “So I don’t know if we are going to win everything, but the season is going well so far.”
It certainly is, and given their resurgence the Blues have a realistic chance of overhauling Arsenal and Manchester City at the top of the table – although it may be the tightest title race in living memory if all three clubs continue to rack up the results as they currently are.
And how will Eto’o cope with the challenges ahead?
“I love the big games,” he said. “There is a huge difference between English football and the other championships, you almost can’t compare it, but I am trying to adapt very quickly and that’s okay.”
Following his three goals against the reigning champions, it looks like that transformation is complete.
