On this day: Van Persie 'champions' dig at Arsenal and Diarra at 'breaking point'

On the 22nd January 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United and West Ham.

I am casting my eye back to this exact day, the 22nd January 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 22nd January 2013 …

‘Surrounded by champions’

Robin van Persie, who at the time was enjoying a great time at his new club Manchester United, had a sly dig at his former employers Arsenal.

His £24 million switch had hurt many an Arsenal fan - but these comments did not help matters:

“All these little things added together make a big difference. It makes me feel good that I'm surrounded by champions.”

He himself got his hands on that long elusive title just a few months later after United to a title win in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final season in charge of the club.

A year later and it looks as if Arsenal might be the ones lifting the Premier League title this season - and not Van Persie’s United.

Alou Go-be elsewhere

West Ham midfielder Alou Diarra launched a scathing attack on the management team at West Ham United.

The French international arrived in London for £2 million in the summer of 2012 did so off the back of a European Championship campaign as a starter for France.

But he was not happy with The Hammers, especially his boss Sam Allardyce:

“I am positively at breaking point. At all the clubs where I’ve been, I’ve always had a discussion with the coach, so I know what he expected of me, how the team plays, my positioning. But since my arrival at West Ham, I never spoke with the manager. Every day is 'Hello, goodbye’. There is no dialogue, no explanation. I was told that I was a priority for the manager… After a few weeks, I realised that there were a lot of lies. This agent has fooled me. Some people have made money on my back.”

Diarra is still at West Ham - but expected to leave in this transfer window or the next recently calling West ham a ‘dead end’ ‘bad career choice’.

One more year

DONE DEAL: Chelsea defender Ashley Cole signed a new one-year extension at the club. After weeks of negotiations he signed on the dotted line of a one-year extension.

However, no such deal seems in the offing 12 months later. Cole is out of favour at the club - and all set to leave in the summer for nothing.
