Thibaut Courtois – the greatest Chelsea footballer never to play for the club?
That could well be the case if Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has his way, because with the future of the Belgian stopper still in the air, his current manager has been speaking about the possibility of signing him permanently.
Asked if he would pay €26million for Courtois, Simeone reportedly told Cuatro, “Definitely. For me, any price for Courtois would be cheap. He is a young guy who has a huge future ahead of him and is on course to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world.”
He called it a “huge coup” to sign a ‘keeper of such quality, before tempering his excitement – and that of the Atletico fans – somewhat by adding, “It will not be easy. It depends what Courtois wants. I always talk about football with the club, and the club know what we want, but it isn’t up to us as he isn’t our player.”
That ball is firmly in Chelsea’s court, but with Jose Mourinho recently singing the praises of Petr Cech, and with no sign of the Blues’ current number one handing over his gloves just yet, Courtois may have a big decision to make next summer.
While most clubs are desperate for one top quality goalkeeper, Chelsea are blessed with two, but they can only keep them both happy for so long, and one senses the Belgian may simply be a victim of bad timing in relation to his spell at Stamford Bridge.
