Manchester United latest: Record-breaking Mata bid submitted, duo miss semi-final

News, views and rumours relating to Manchester United in the past 24 hours.

Manchester United take on Sunderland this evening in the Capital One Cup semi final second leg at Old Trafford that stands at 2-1 to Sunderland on aggregate.

In team news, captain Nemanja Vidic is suspended for three games and will begin his ban for the game this evening following his dismissal at Stamford Bridge on Sunday for a late challenge on Eden Hazard.

Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie also miss the clash with the Black Cats although the strike duo are thought to be close to a return to full fitness.

United legend Gary Neville believe a Capital One Cup would help ‘salvage’ the season for David Moyes.

"I think in terms of realistic achievements this is a big part of it. To go out against Sunderland on Wednesday would be another massive dent in this season," stated Neville.

In transfer news, United have made a £35 million bid for Juan Mata according to reports. The Chelsea playmaker has been the subject of a bid that, if accepted, would be a club transfer record fee.

However, Atletico Madrid are preparing to ‘hijack’ the bid to sign Mata from Chelsea, according to The Telegraph. The Spanish giants are understood to be ‘readying’ an offer to swap striker Diego Costa for the Blues playmaker.

The Mirror claims United have ‘made contact’ with Juventus over Arturo Vidal who the Red Devils hope to lure to Old Trafford this month with a ‘bumper pay rise’.

This follows reports that broke yesterday that United are ‘interested’ in signing Dante. The English champions are now reportedly monitoring the availability of the Bayern Munich defender.

Elsewhere, youngster Wilfrid Zaha is ‘set’ for a loan move to Cardiff according to M.E.N. It is expected the England attacker will agree a move for the remainder of the season after failing to break into the first team under David Moyes.
