Chelsea loanee set to be named Belgium's best of 2013 - ahead of Everton and Arsenal target

Thorgan Hazard is the favourite to win the Belgian Golden Shoe this evening despite competition from Michy Batsuahyi.

Of the many Chelsea players currently out on loan across the continent one who has impressed significantly is the little brother of Eden Hazard. Thorgan Hazard, who was dubbed the better of the siblings by Chelsea’s £32 million man, has now been out on loan at Zulte Waregem in his Belgian homeland for the past 18 months - and has taken them to unheard of heights.

Last term they almost won the Belgian League title for the first time in their relatively short history and he has continued that fine individual form into the new season.

Such form saw him earn a Belgium call-up last season - and as with many professional footballers he is now dreaming of a place at the World Cup next summer.

And it seems he will tonight conclude his fine form - as he is the massive favourite to be named the winner of the 2013 Soulier d’Or, or the Belgian Golden Shoe as the best player in the Belgian Pro League for the calendar year 2013.

He would follow in the footsteps of players such as Vincent Kompany, Jan Ceulemans, Paul van Himst and last year’s winner Dieumerci Mbokani.

He is in the running alongside Arsenal and Everton target Michy Batsuahyi of Standard Liege, Anderlecht goalkeeper Silvio Proto and Club Brugge winger Maxime Lestienne - and according to most pundits and readers of Belgian site RTBF he is a shoe-in for the … well, the shoe.

44% of fans polled believed Hazard deserved the award - with Batshuayi coming in second with 31% - but Hazard is the overwhelming favourite.

It would be a good time for him to receive a boost.

He has been at the centre of a transfer brawl between his current farm club and the one that wants to take him on until the end of the season - Belgian giants Anderlecht.

He recently admitted he wanted to make the switch - while Zulte maintain he will be going nowhere, a matter Chelsea are ready to step in on in the next week.

But to be crowned Belgium’s best will hopefully be a welcome distraction - unless he is the victim of a shock win.
