Bastos already Roma hero after scarf gaffe

Roma have claimed that new signing Michel Bastos accidentally posed holding a scarf with an anti-Lazio slogan and didn't know what it said.

Roma new boy Michel Bastos was presented to fans at the Stadio Olimpico last night and left club officials red-faced by posing for pictures with a scarf containing an anti-Lazio insult.

The Brazilian winger has signed from United Arab Emirates club Al Ain and was presented to fans yesterday before Roma faced Juventus at the Stadio Olimpico.

However, things didn't go according to plan for Roma's PR department as Bastos was thrown a scarf from the stands and posed for photos with it, allegedly not realising the message it contained.

A grinning Bastos was photographed by the press holding the red scarf with 'Lazio merda' emblazoned on the front.

Immediately afterwards, Roma moved to prevent any fallout by claiming that Bastos didn't understand what was written on the scarf.

"Bastos displayed the scarf which was thrown by fans not knowing the message that it contained. The club and Michel apologise for what happened," a tweet from Roma's official account read.

However, the photo has been a massive hit with Roma fans on social networks and has made Bastos a popular new acquisition.

He may not be so popular with a large part of the crowd when Roma face Lazio in their 'away' derby on February 9.
