Spanish football expert Guillem Balague said Real Madrid striker and reported Arsenal transfer target Karim Benzema is in last chance saloon during Sky Sports’ TV coverage of Real Madrid’s Copa del Rey game against Espanyol last night.
The French striker has been under a lot of pressure at Real Madrid so far this season, with the very serious suggestion that he could be replaced by Alvaro Morata in the Real Madrid attack.
All of Real Madrid’s players are under pressure but Balague was clear to point out that Benzema needs to perform over the rest of the season to stop Real Madrid tooling up in the summer.
“He’s in last chance saloon, he needs to score 30 goals this season,” said Balague during Sky’s live broadcast of the game.
He’s very nearly halfway to that 30 goal target with his superb header last night his 14th goal of the season for the club in all competitions.
The problem Benzema has is the calibre of strikers that Real Madrid have been linked with ahead of possible summer moves with the suggestion of big money bids for players like Luis Suarez and Wayne Rooney already doing the rounds in various sources.
The 26-year-old is more than capable of scoring another 16 goals over the second half of the season but if attacking heavyweights do arrive in the summer, it threatens his position in the Real Madrid line-up.
He won’t want to entertain the idea of sitting on the bench throughout next season, which means sides, especially Arsenal, could come in and make bids with one-year left to run on his contract.
