Reports emanating from Germany claim Arsenal midfielder Tomas Rosicky could be a surprise transfer target for Bayern Munich.
Considering the midfielders currently at Pep Guardiola’s disposal, it is a somewhat leftfield rumour, and yet given the Czech international’s experience and continuing influence on the Gunners’ midfield, it may not be as bizarre as first thought.
With contract talks reportedly stalling, this could simply be a case of a potential suitor suddenly riding into view at a very convenient time. After all, it is claimed Arsene Wenger remains confident a deal will be struck.
And he will hope so, because as much as Arsenal fans would no doubt like to see the arrival of German starlet Julian Draxler – a player very much for the future and yet one whose innate talent suggests he can also play a big part in the present – Wenger needs players like Rosicky to ensure Arsenal continue to improve and challenge both domestically and in Europe next season.
If the North London side do what they are currently suggesting they might, and win the Premier League, everyone will be gunning for them next season. And as we all know, the title is far harder to defend.
So it is players like Rosicky – experienced, influential players who know the club inside and out – who will be vital while the new arrivals bed in and learn the Arsenal ethos.
I wrote a piece following Arsenal’s 2-0 FA Cup victory over Tottenham Hotspur, a game in which Rosicky starred, about the response of Arsenal fans to the 33-year-old’s performance.
They called for a new contract to be offered, recognising his unwavering importance to the team. And that is something Wenger no doubt understands, which means these latest reports of a summer switch to the Bundesliga should be taken with a pinch of salt.
The club will ensure he gets the new deal his form and influence on the pitch deserve. Or at least they should do.
