According to the Telegragh, Manchester United are considering breaking their transfer fee record with an audacious £37m bid for Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata
The Red Devils are in dire need of bolstering a faltering squad as they look to bounce back from a struggling campaign and rescue a Champions League place for next season.
A host of stars such as Koke, Marco Reus, Ilkay Gundogan and Paul Pogba have been linked with a move to Old Trafford but the probability of Manchester United boss David Moyes landing these stars are slight.
Chelsea midfielder Juan Mata finds himself in an entirely different situation. Firmly behind fellow attacking midfielders Willian, Oscar and Hazard in Jose Mourinho’s pecking order, perhaps such an offer as well as the Special One’s assertion that United are no longer a title threat is tempting enough for the Portuguese boss to allow the Spanish international to leave.
Ex-Manchester United right-back Gary Neville isn’t afraid to voice his opinions over Manchester United’s current affairs, and on Monday Night Football the defender admitted that it was a lot of money for a player who ‘Man United would need to accommodate,’ adding:
“It’s a lot of money, but they need to sign him.
“Does he fit with the typical philosophy of Manchester United? I would say no
“The first question I think is, where is he going to play? Rooney and Van Persie are up top, so are they going to play him off the left or off the right? Because he can’t play in central midfield”
“Maybe they have to change their philosophy and that is what David Moyes is thinking, playing narrow wide players or maybe playing with three in midfield, but they would have to change to accommodate Juan Mata from the way in which they normally play”
“He’s a fantastic football player there is no doubt, David Moyes and Manchester United need to sign a big player, they need to make a noise.”
