Revealed - Stat suggests Chelsea, Liverpool never had a chance of getting Real Madrid star

Xabi Alonso

Xabi Alonso is more important to Real Madrid than many may realise.

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso recently put an end to speculation over his future by signing a new contract with the Spanish giants.

The midfielder was being targeted by Liverpool and Chelsea according to reports but throughout the speculation surrounding the Spaniard, Carlo Ancelotti always maintained that he had a big role to play for the club.

There is quite a simple stat which proves why Real Madrid were always going to offer him a new deal; since he’s returned from a broken foot, Real Madrid don’t lose when he’s in the side.

He’s made 15 appearances since he returned from that foot problem as well as a groin problem, which kept him in the medical room and away from the first team.

“In the 15 games since Xabi's return, Real has a record of 13 victories and two draws: one at home to Juventus in the Champions League and one away to Osasuna in La Liga,” reads a report on Marca’s website.

The worrying thing for Real Madrid’s opponents is that there’s been a slight perception in the Spanish press that he still has much more to give over the second half of the season.

It was always going to take Alonso a little time to settle back into the side, increase his fitness and produce his best form.

His experience seems to have enabled him to quickly form key relationships with Real Madrid’s important players across the middle, which gives him a platform to perform and strength through the side to release other attacking players.

“As the matches have gone by, Alonso has gradually gotten back into the swing of things and established a growing rapport with Modric. The Croat's excellent form has also been a key factor, as he helps out the Spaniard defensively and lightens the load going forward,” adds the report.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale, Angel Di Maria and other first team stars may get the headlines regularly but Alonso is arguably the most important component of the squad.
